What are the steps in a typical water damage restoration project?
1.) Assess the damage. Before dryout work can begin, the extent of the water damage must be properly assessed. Often this is performed with a moisture meter or thermal imaging equipment. A visual inspection alone cannot detect the full extent of saturation. Many materials, such as sheet rock and wood framing, can appear very dry to the touch while holding tremendous amounts of water.
2.) Address the source. The source of the water intrusion must be properly identified and remedied. This may include hiring a third party contractor such as a plumber, roofer or drainage specialist. Occasionally the identification work is performed in conjunction with the tear out of damaged materials.
3.) Remove unsalvageable materials Porous items such as upholstery and carpet padding may not be salvageable. The two biggest factors in determining if a material can be salvage are the type of water (grey, black, etc) and the length of time before dry out.
4.) Dry out saturated materials. A variety of techniques are often employed, including dehumidifiers, fans, heaters, carpet fans and water pumps.

Sewer Backup Damage
A sewer backup creates a stressful and emotional situation for the homeowner/ renter. A proper response to a sewer backup can greatly minimize property damage and diminish the threat of illness.
The sewer lateral is owned and maintained by the property owner including any part, which may extend into the street or public right of way. More often than not, the cause of a backup in your lateral is from items that the line is not meant to handle, such as kid’s toys, underwear, towels, diapers, paper products other than toilet paper, keys and even false teeth. If everyone would be careful about how they dispose of certain products, our systems would be a great deal more efficient, cause fewer backups, cost us all less money, and prevent a lot of misery.
If you experience a sewer backup, stop using any water immediately! If you are not using any water and the sewer backup levels keep rising, the blockage is in the City sewer line.
Sewer backup problems are the most difficult and expensive to correct, and can cause the worst damage. This sewage can be coming from the street drain near your house, if the sewers are filled up further down the line, or if they are blocked from leaves and debris. In the worst cases, the sewer can have enough pressure to completely fill your basement if the water level is higher than your foundation somewhere else on the sewer line. However, if there is enough pressure in the sewer system, the sewage will rise through the wash machine drain connection, utility sink, and basement bathroom fixtures. Basement water can be very difficult to treat affectively, especially when it involves sewer backout. You should call in a professionals to treat this because of the many health issues sewer backout can cause if not handled correctly.
Here are a few steps you can take to help prevent this problem. Do not put dairy products, fats, oil, grease or greasy foods down the garbage disposal or drain. Freeze small amounts of fats, oils and grease in a lidded container and dispose of it in a trash receptacle. Mix small amounts of cooking oil with an absorbent material such as cat litter or coffee grounds, place it in a lidded container and dispose of it in a trash receptacle.
